How to Choose an AI Automation Agency
The Demo Trap
Most AI agencies sell demos. A chatbot that works in a controlled script, a workflow that runs on sample data, a dashboard that looks impressive in a screenshot. The gap between a demo and production is where projects die.
What to Look For
1. They scope around a measurable outcome. Not "implement AI" but "reduce support response time from 4 hours to 5 minutes." If an agency can't name the metric, they can't deliver it.
2. They build for the failure cases. Real automation handles errors, retries, and edge cases. Ask: "What happens when the API is down? When the data is malformed? When the AI is unsure?" A good agency has answers.
3. They ship end-to-end. Data pipeline, model integration, evaluation, and the human handoff when the AI isn't confident. If they only do the model, you're left to build the rest yourself.
4. They're honest about what AI can't do. An agency that promises "100% automation, zero humans" is selling fiction. The best systems are human-in-the-loop.
The Questions to Ask
- "Show me a production deployment, not a demo."
- "What's your evaluation process for measuring wrong answers?"
- "Who owns maintenance after launch?"
- "What's the rollback plan if it breaks?"
The Bottom Line
A good AI automation agency closes the gap between prototype and production. That gap is usually everything except the model — and it's where the real value lives.
